Teaching Method Beter Nederlands Leren

All language training sessions are always conducted with me, Fons Vandervorst, as your personal coach.

Introduction

To achieve the greatest possible and targeted progress in Dutch, three crucial elements are combined during the language training sessions:

• Immediate corrections with explanations tailored to the student
• Supportive and detailed theory with examples for every key aspect of the language
• Additional optimization through specific language skill exercises

Clients can choose from more than 150 topics that best suit their needs, along with corresponding, tailored exercises.

As a practical tool, each student can also use the convenient online booking system on my website to schedule new language training sessions at any time.

Element 1: Immediate, Tailored Improvements for the Student

During the language training sessions, I note down the specific improvements for the student I’m coaching in a personalized document.

Red = error
Green = correction
Underlined = correct syntax (= sentence structure)
Struck through = should be omitted from the sentence
(Parentheses) = can be phrased differently or more effectively

Examples:

• Ondanks het de stijgende aanvraag naar voor meer (strijd tegen) fiscale fraudebestrijding, werd er jarenlang gezegd dat er (geen) onvoldoende geld ter beschikking was om zo’n een instelling op te bouwen.
• Ik heb met hem een discussie gehad om uit te leggen dat hij moest meer structuur in zijn (het) werk moest vinden.
• Er zijn veel wandelingen dat die ik zou graag te zou (willen) doen.
• Dat kan ook veel stress (geven) met zich meebrengen.
• Het moet (in samenwerking) samen gediscussieerd besproken worden met de minister, de politiediensten, FOD Financiën en magistraten die al gespecialiseerd zijn met in zaken rond fraude.
• Omdat ik wilde ook zeker wilde zijn dat iedereen zich goed voelde.
• Ik weet niet als of ze echt check (voor de) het adres controleren.
• Stel dat er daarvan zelfs slechts 2 of 3 procent ervan aan door ons onze ministerie besteed kan worden, en zou er verdwijnt al een groot deel van onze structurele problemen verdwijnen.
• Er zijn veel dingen die je vind terugvindt in het de werkwereld.

Element 2: Detailed theory with examples for each key aspect of the language

When a student doesn’t understand something, I like to provide a focused and clear overview of the theory, along with a detailed explanation that clarifies and demonstrates why a particular answer is incorrect and how it should be phrased correctly.

Examples:

De buigings-e voor het bijvoeglijk naamwoord (= adjective)

Ik heb geen dure fiets of duur fietsslot, maar in die winkel zijn de fietsen wel heel duur.

The irregular forms of the steps of comparison

We gaan met de familie graag en dikwijls naar de Ardennen, maar liever en vaker naar zee.

The Use of Personal Pronouns

Toen zijn collega’s het (direct object = COD) aan mij (voorzetsel = preposition) vroegen, heb ik (onderwerp = subject) hun (cooperative object = COI) laten weten dat hij (onderwerp) zich (wederkerend = reciprocal) niet goed voelde.

Element 3: Specific Language Skills Exercises

This language training can take place both during and outside of class hours and is divided into six areas:

• Speaking & Presenting
• Listening
• Reading
• Writing
• Professional and General Vocabulary
• Grammar

More than 150 topics with over 1000 targeted exercises are made available to the student.

You can find some sample exercises on my website on the ‘Documents’ page.

Depending on the client’s specific wishes and needs, more attention is given to the most important areas (for example, “speaking” and “professional vocabulary”).

When the student has completed additional exercises outside of class, we work together during class time to identify any remaining difficulties or areas of confusion, with the goal of resolving them completely.

Examples:

Speaking and presenting
Kies een bedrijf dat actief is in de financiële wereld en bespreek het maatschappelijke imago ervan.

Writing
Geef informatie over een vreemd land dat u heeft bezocht. Wat viel u het meest op tijdens uw verblijf op deze bestemming en wat waren de aangenaamste en vervelendste ervaringen? (minimum 300 woorden)

General Vocabulary
Anna woont op de .............................. boven mij. We zien ............................... niet zo vaak want ze werkt veel en heeft het altijd heel ............................... Ze is kapster dus moet ze ook in het weekend ............................... Als we elkaar zien, .............................. we het altijd even over het werk en onze gemeenschappelijke vrienden.

Grammar
Maak een goede zin:

• Bleek - of nooit - op tijd - het grootste deel - komt - van de werknemers - zelden – dat
• Mocht - een probleem zijn - niet - vooral - dan - toch nog - om - er - mij te contacteren – aarzel
• Waarom - spreek - ik - je - loop - altijd - wanneer - weg - tegen je?

In closing

In addition to the serious work, time can also be set aside for language practice in a more relaxed or playful context if the student wishes, such as an informal conversation or a quiz.
